Updates on the Bobcat Fire Litigation

July 2024 Case Update: Final Stages of Bobcat Fire Litigation

As the Bobcat Fire litigation nears its conclusion, significant strides have been made towards closing this chapter for the survivors and the community. Mikal Watts and the attorneys and staff of Watts Law Firm LLP have been working hard to ensure a swift distribution of funds from the Qualified Settlement Fund for their clients, emphasizing the urgency of this process to our partners at Milestone.

Support for Tax Exemption Legislation

In parallel, Mikal has actively supported proposed legislation at both state and federal levels aimed at eliminating the taxation on civil recoveries in disaster-related cases. Senate Bill 1004 (SB 1004) proposes to exempt from taxation any settlement payments related to California wildfires, effective from January 1, 2020, onward. This would include survivors of the Bobcat fire.

This legislation is crucial for enhancing the financial relief provided to our clients. We encourage all affected to voice their support to their representatives, highlighting the significant impact such legislation would have on their recovery process.

Mikal Watts extends his gratitude to the community for their trust and patience throughout this demanding legal journey. His recent discussions with Southern California Edison’s General Counsel have reinforced the utility’s recognition of the community’s resilience and the gravity of the situation faced by the residents of Juniper Hills.
