Watts Law Firm LLP Announces Major Settlement Reached in Zantac Litigation

Watts Law Firm LLP, led by Attorney Mikal Watts and in collaboration with nine other plaintiff law firms, announces a significant settlement agreement totaling up to $2.2 billion. This settlement resolves claims from 80,000 plaintiffs nationwide, who alleged that Zantac, a widely-used medication, was linked to causing cancer. This resolution marks a pivotal moment in addressing the accountability of pharmaceutical manufacturers and underscores the collective efforts to uphold justice for affected individuals and their families.

This landmark achievement, the result of prolonged and determined litigation, underscores the firm’s unwavering commitment to pursuing justice for the thousands affected. As we acknowledge this settlement, we recognize the resilience and courage of the plaintiffs and their families.

Mikal Watts, who served on the Plaintiff Steering Committee and took 65 depositions himself, remarked to the San Antonio Express-News: “This $2.2 billion settlement is an important start to resolving these claims for our clients, who look forward to finishing the process with the other three defendants.”

Zantac, or ranitidine, has been prescribed for treating ulcers and GERD by reducing stomach acid. However, its safety was called into question when the FDA discovered the presence of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a known carcinogen, in 2019. This revelation heightened concerns about Zantac’s potential link to various cancers of the bladder, stomach, liver, and pancreas.

Continuing Advocacy and Future Directions

The recent settlement in the Zantac litigation marks a significant milestone, yet it is not the end of our journey. Mikal Watts has emphasized that the fight is not over, as there are still claims pending against three other defendants. Watts Law Firm LLP remains steadfast in its mission to address and resolve these remaining claims, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to those impacted by unsafe pharmaceutical practices.

As we move forward, Watts Law Firm LLP will continue to lead in mass tort litigation, advocating for stronger consumer safety standards and ensuring that all responsible parties are held accountable. This commitment underscores our dedication not only to the ongoing Zantac litigation but also to the broader goal of fostering a safer, more just pharmaceutical marketplace.
